Will TikTok be banned in India?
A sudden drop in popularity followed by a risk of banning. What happened to Tiktok?
There is a new category war on the Internet. It's all about content, creativity and clicks. But in this battle between TikTok and YouTube, it all comes down to one question: who owns the bottom of the pyramid?
The COVID-19 pandemic and the resulting containment have increased the popularity of a few applications, including TikTok. Last month, TikTok was reported to have reached the billion user mark. But today, the app is experiencing a drop in audience due to the ongoing battle between YouTubers and TikTokers.
YouTube vs TikTok: What Happened
It all started when the Youtuber Elvish Yadav posted a series of TikTokers on his YouTube channel, comparing young videographers to ragpickers, questioning their intelligence and making fun of make-up girls. In response, two TikTokers named Amir Siddiqui and Revolver Rani shouted his derogatory and classist comments.Revolver Rani's reaction triggered a carpet of video bombs which saw supporters of the two communities trying to outdo themselves. The online battle reached its peak when CarryMinati decided to make another roast of TikTokers on its Youtube channel.
After the YouTube video, CarryMinati became a real hit on YouTube. The video has been viewed over 70 million times and has even become the most popular Indian non-music video on YouTube. Shortly thereafter, problems began to arise and the Minati video was removed for violating YouTube's terms of service.
Then Twitter became the debate platform for the YouTube vs TikTok battle. The Twitter storm quickly spread and many users demanded justice for CarryMinati. In addition, users have started using a hashtag to bring down and ban TikTok in the country. The Twitter storm includes #JusticeForCarry and #BanTikTok.
